Abortion Rights is issuing this statement to reaffirm our commitment to equality and justice amidst recent events in the UK. As an organisation dedicated to ensuring reproductive rights and fighting discrimination, we cannot remain silent in the face of hate and division.
We are making this statement to emphasise that our struggle for reproductive justice is inherently linked to the broader fight against all forms of oppression. Racism and violence have no place in our movement. By addressing these issues directly, we aim to reaffirm our commitment to an inclusive and equitable society, where every individual’s rights are respected and upheld. It is essential that our advocacy is grounded in principles of respect, solidarity, and nonviolence.
Abortion Rights strongly condemns the recent violence and the racist misinformation that has fueled these disturbing events across the UK. The horrific knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed holiday club in Southport, which resulted in the deaths of three young girls and left several others severely injured, has been exploited by extremists to spread lies and incite hatred.
False claims on social media have maliciously misidentified the teenage suspect as an immigrant, sparking a wave of xenophobic and racist violence. This deliberate distortion of facts has targeted Muslims, migrants, refugees, and other minoritised communities, escalating tensions and terrorising vulnerable communities.
The ensuing riots, which began in Merseyside and spread further, are a disgraceful abuse of a tragedy to push an agenda of hate. These actions are not only unacceptable but deeply damaging to the fabric of our society.
We demand an immediate end to this hate-fueled violence and misinformation. It is crucial that we respond with truth, solidarity, and unwavering support for all affected communities. Together, we must reject racism and work towards a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
