Fine Hair Care | How To Look After Fine Hair
When it comes to looking after fine hair, I advocate that less is more. That means less heat, less product, less touching the hair and less fuss for more volume.
I’ve been working with hair for over 35 years and I know from experience that keeping it simple achieves the best results. Follow my expert tips for looking after fine hair. Reduce fly aways, add volume and get your hair looking and feeling fabulous.

1. Keep the Scalp Clean for Healthy Hair Growth
Every hair follicle has an oil gland attached to it. Those with fine hair tend to have more individual hairs. That makes fine hair types more prone to oiliness.
So if your hair is prone to oiliness, it’s best to wash your hair more often and, if needed, every day.
Keeping the scalp clean should be your priority. If your scalp is clean, it gives the best environment for healthy hair growth.
As a general guide, I’d say most people need to wash their hair 2-3 times a week.
However, if you find that your hair looks and feels better by washing it every day, then go for it.
The most important thing is to choose a good quality shampoo that’s gentle on the scalp.
2. Choose Lightweight Conditioners
Lightweight and detangling conditioners are best for fine hair.
Fine hair needs moisture too. When hair is too dry, some common problems occur. For instance, your hair can become prone to breakage, tangling and flyaways.
The only way to combat this is by keeping hair hydrated. The best way to keep hair hydrated is with regular conditioning.
Avoid conditioners with silicones as they will weigh heavy on fine hair, leaving it feeling flat.
3. Deep Condition for Volume
The best way to get volume in fine hair is to get moisture to the hair’s core. Moisture plumps out the cuticle, leaving the individual strands feeling thicker, giving the hair more volume, reducing tangling and static.
Restore and Shine Hair Masque is a deep conditioner developed to do just that. It gets moisture to the hair’s core, whilst smoothing the cuticle to lock in moisture.
It gives volume to fine hair without leaving any residue. Plus, it detangles and reduces static to prevent fly away hair.
4. Be Gentle when Hair is Wet
Be gentle with wet hair. Squeeze or gently pat the hair dry. Avoid rubbing hair with your towel.
Hair is most vulnerable to breakage when wet, so it’s best to avoid combing. Do everything you can to avoid moisture loss. This is vital. When you rough up the hair cuticle breakage occurs and results in moisture loss.
5. Reduce Tangling
Fine hair is very prone to tangling. Here’s what you can do to reduce tangles.
- Try sleeping on a silk or satin pillow
- Turn down the heat on your hairdryer.
- Wash your hair in warm, not hot water..
- Deep Condition fine hair every week.
- Choose styling products that add volume and reduce tangles.
6. Choose Short and Mid Length Styles
Shorter and mid-length styles are better for fine hair.
If you want to keep hair long, go easy on the layers, as they can make the ends look wispy.
7. Choose Styling Tools for Volume
The best volume boosting styling tools for fine hair are Velcro rollers, a fine-tooth comb, the Denman hairbrush, the vent hairbrush.
8. Choose Volume Boosting Styling Products
Choose lightweight styling products. Avoid heavy oils, waxes and hairsprays.
Turn down the heat on your hairdryer to avoid excessive heat on your hair. Excess heat can cause static, helping flyaways to flourish.
So, opt for a cool setting on your hairdryer.
It may slow down drying time, but it will give you a better finish.
Help is at hand with Styling Mist for Natural Hold and Volume as it speeds up drying time to reduce heat stress on hair.
Plus, it contains Honey to reduce static, meaning you don’t have to worry about flyaways.
Just use 2 -3 spritzes on damp hair before you dry and style. Less is More.
