The Industrial Revolution here in the UK and across the world helped to build the economies and lifestyle that we all enjoy today. However, as new industries have emerged over the years, the gargantuan warehouses and factories that were the cathedrals of this development were emptied and soon became husks of a past time. With less and less land available to build on, the past few decades have seen these monuments of past ingenuity reused and repurposed for the modern day.
Located about 70 miles west-northwest of Dortmund, Wunderland Kalkar is an amusement park built on the site of an impotent nuclear power plant that was never put into operation. The park and hotel complex attracts around 300,000 visitors per year with its 40 attractions and is certainly not a location you’d usually imagine for a family day out!
Bankside Power Station, London
Bankside Power Station, located in London’s Borough of Southwark, generated electricity for the city for nearly 100 years before being decommissioned in 1981. Since then it’s become the Tate Modern, one of the world’s most famous modern art museums, and is a standard bearer for London’s tourism economy.
Berlin’s Berghain nightclub is almost certainly the world’s most famous (and infamous) nightclub. Heralded as a holy site for Berlin’s thriving techno scene, the club is located on the border os the former West and East Berlin and has its origins just 7 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall in the shape of its predecessor Ostgut. Opening as Berghain in 2004, the club is housed in a former East Berlin powerhouse and is about as brutalist a building you could ever hope to see.
