The Ice Cream Shop, West Point, New York
The Ice Cream Shoppe is located just across the street from the West Point Museum, near the Army Military base. The first thing I noticed when I walked inside was a ” Go Army, Beat Navy” flag on the wall so I had no doubts being near the military college. The Ice Cream Shoppe has a nice atmosphere enhanced by a fashionable ice cream counter (with chairs instead of stools), and seating at tables both inside and outside. If you have time to hang out, there are shelves with board games to play.
The Ice Cream shop features coffee drinks, slushies and Perry’s Ice Cream. I was only here for the ice cream, so I ordered our server’s favorite flavor – Cannoli (mascarpone flavored ice cream with cannoli shells and chocolate chips) and Kahlua Almond Amaretto (kahuna Amaretto ice cream with roasted almond pieces). The ice cream was fresh and good.
It was such a beautiful day that we sat outside to enjoy the ice cream and watch people and cars coming and going.
In the area: we were in West Point to learn a little bit about the history of the Military Academy and see some of the sights.
afterward, we ventured to Pennsylvania to visit Grey Towers. It was a bit of a distance between the two, but for the visitors we had from California, they were close to each other.
West Point Tours, West Point, New York – West Point Military Academy is a college that trains fantastic scholars and amazing athletics to be great leaders in military service. Formerly an engineering school, West Point now offers a wide variety of majors. The best way to tour the place is with a tour bus. – we went with West Point Tours, I do not know if there are other tour companies available.
The tour started at a military museum just outside the entrance of the base. The museum is free, but we did not walk through it today. We boarded our tour bus and were given important information, such as where cell phones were and were not allowed, We were taken around the base and got out at a few places such as a chapel, a grave yard and a park-like area over-looking the Hudson River. At each stop we learned about the fascinating history and traditions attached to the location. The graveyard had some famous war heroes such as Norman Schwarzkopf buried, and had some grandiose headstones. There was a chapel in the graveyard that was very old, very plain and very interesting. This tour is worth taking.
Grey Towers National Historic Site, Milford, Pennsylvania – Gifford Pinchot was the first chief of the United States Forest Service and the governor of Pennsylvania for two terms. Grey Towers, his childhood home, is open to tour and educate the public about his work in the field of conservation and the National Forest Service. The estate has trails, films, tours and exhibits that enable visitors to learn more about Pinchot;’s legacy – a good place to stop by if you are in the area, but hours for tours and entering the buildings are limited so check before you go.
