Phonics is a crucial component of early literacy education. This is especially true for first-grade students developing their reading and writing skills. Since every student will grow and learn at their own rate, it is crucial to have phonics intervention ideas. These help struggling students build confidence and improve their phonics knowledge. Thankfully, this list is ready to help students master challenging phonics skills!
Intervention Ideas
Strategic intervention is essential to build phonics skills. Thankfully, there are tons of activities to help meet the needs of each student.
For example, practicing phoneme segmentation with sound boxes is a great way to help students break down words. Students can draw a series of boxes corresponding to the number of sounds in a word and then use tokens to represent each sound.
Word building with letter tiles is also a great hands-on approach! Students can manipulate tiles to create and deconstruct words. This is a great way to support phonics patterns and spelling.
I also love to use interactive read-alouds and decodable text practice. It is so important to meet students where they are. By reading a book designed to reinforce phonics instruction, students work on various skills, such as blending and decoding.
Phonics Review
Mastering phonics skills takes tons of practice. So, these review pages are an incredible way for students to work through their phonics skills with engaging activities. Specifically, there are 14 2-sided practice pages for essential skills, such as short vowels and blends. Each sheet allows students to say sounds, stretch through words, and read words and phrases fluently. Additionally, students will write words and read sentences. It will be fantastic to see the growth throughout the week!
Students will be so proud of their growth when working on phonics intervention ideas!
Word Fluency
All levels of readers need plenty of fluency practice, especially beginning readers. Thankfully, these Daily Phonics Fluency Cards are the perfect way to help children improve their reading fluency and phonics skills. Specifically, there are 180 cards with skills that build on each other. There is even a spiral review of previous phonics skills. The cards are in a 5-day cycle to ensure organization, consistency, and proper development of skills.
Word Play
Word Play is the ultimate resource when looking for favorite phonics activities! This resource includes word ladders and making word activities. These are the perfect way to promote vocabulary development, phonics, spelling, and word recognition skills.
Specifically, there are 82 Word Play sheets. Each includes a word ladder, which challenges students to build a chain of words by changing one letter at a time. This is a fantastic way for students to recognize word patterns and make connections between words. Additionally, each sheet includes a Making Words activity where students make as many words as possible with the given letters.
Students will love how these activities scaffold their learning while providing tons of options for differentiation!
Phonics intervention ideas help all students meet their true potential. While content may be tough and challenging, intervention ideas help make phonics skills accessible to all students. Thankfully, this list will help all students develop a strong phonics foundation!
