How Long Does It Take to Potty Train a Dachshund?
Most Dachshunds will be fully potty trained by 6-9 months old. Six months being very generous, and nine months being more realistic.
However, if not consistently trained, Dachshund potty training could take up to a year or more!
Friends, if you’re dedicated and prepared, your Dachshund will learn the ropes more quickly, leading to lasting success. I have tips on that below.
House training a puppy of another breed typically takes between 4 and 6 months. Generally, smaller dog breeds tend to take a bit longer since they have smaller bladders and faster metabolisms.
Every Puppy is Unique: Whether it’s a Dachshund puppy or a puppy of another breed, it’s important to note that individual puppies may vary in how quickly they learn. Some may take a little longer than others.
Avoid This Mistake!
The biggest mistake a Dachshund parent can make is bringing home a new Dachshund puppy, attempting to potty train them over the weekend and then going back to work the following week.
Leaving them home alone all day will result in accidents and confusion in your Dachshund’s training – and it’s not the puppy’s fault.
If You Work Outside The Home
You’ll need a dog walker or a doggie daycare, to let them out regularly. Without this, your Dachshund’s training will face major setbacks!
How Do I Stop My Dachshund from Peeing in the House?
I have heard this question so many times. Here are two important tips that I share with fellow doxie parents that are struggling with Dachshund training.
1. Don’t Wing It!
One of the biggest tips I share that absolutely works is to use a step-by-step guide for potty training your Dachshund.
Don’t attempt to do this on your own. You and your pup should be focusing on strengthening your bond, not struggling through painful potty-training blunders.

2. Puppy Proof Your Home
Securing your home like you’re keeping a mischievous raptor contained is essential! Despite their short stature, Dachshunds are escape artists that get into everything.
Puppy gates and playpens are lifesavers for Dachshunds and their parents. Use a playpen in the kitchen or mudroom area with no rugs during the day and another for bedtime (with a washable pad underneath).
These tools have been incredibly helpful for my Dachshunds, Eko and Gretta, not only during the training phase but even now, at 2 and 4 years old, when I need to step out of the house.
Honestly friends, puppy-proofing your home makes training so much more manageable.

Is a Dachshund Hard to Potty Train?
They can be…but they don’t have to be. Many folks do believe that the Dachshund dog breed is harder to potty train compared to other dog breeds.
Keep in mind, Dachshunds are high alert hunting hounds. Whether in the house or stepping outside, your doxie has ‘super senses’ that call their attention to everything that moves, makes a sound, or has a smell.
That being said, they do require a good amount of patience and daily consistency to keep them on track.
Dachshund potty training is a well-known challenge in the doxie parent community, but, yes, they can be trained.
