Five Interesting Facts About Pallets

The humble pallet is not much to look at, but it could be
considered the humble backbone of the global economy. A simple platform that is
built out of basic materials, this small object carries the vast majority of
the world’s food and manufactured goods.
Here are five interesting facts about this unheralded
object:
-
Trees are not usually cut down to construct pallets.
The wood of a pallet is typically the by-product of the timber used in house
and construction.
-
It has been estimated that over two-thirds of wooden
pallets are recycled. This rate is far greater than other material like paper,
plastic and aluminium.
-
At the end of a pallet’s life the vast majority are
further recycled into boiler fuel, mulch, wood pellets, or animal bedding.
-
Pallets are typically ‘pooled’ by companies. This means
that the pallets are rented out or leased from a shared pool. This allows
companies to reduce their costs, not have to buy new pallets or your their own
pallet fleet. A pooled pallet has a greater lifespan than a non-pooled wooden
pallet, but its high weight results in higher transport costs and ultimately a
greater carbon footprint.
- In the United States, there are more than 1.8 billion pallets in service. Ninety-three per cent of these pallets are made from trees.
