One special dog is making a splash on the beaches of Peru and warming hearts in the process. Efruz, a 4-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, has become known as Peru’s surfing dog over the last year.
As he rides the waves with his owner and surf instructor Mauro Canella off the coast of San Bartolo, located 30 miles from Lima, the surfing pup tends to draw crowds.
Wearing his signature yellow life-vest, Efruz positions himself at the front of Canella’s surfboard, balancing on all fours as they skim over the waves.

“He loves the sea,” says Canella, who taught Efruz how to surf about a year ago. They’ve become an inseparable surfing duo ever since.
Efruz and Canella can be seen surfing most weekends, along with around a dozen other dog and human pairings enjoying the ocean waves.
While Efruz occasionally takes a dip when they fail to ride a wave (Jack Russells can swim), the adventurous Jack Russell always shakes it off and hops right back on the board.
With his owner’s help, this energetic dog is living out his dream of surf and sun at the San Bartolo beach.
