Eastlake will be holding an Oktoberfest for the first time this year.
Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, inspires similar food and music celebrations throughout the world. Eastlake’s Oktoberfest will go from noon to 5 p.m. at Classic Park, located at 35300 Vine St., on Aug. 1.
There will be no admission charge.
“We’re starting small this year to test the waters,” said Judy Moran, administrative assistant to the mayor and fire chief. “I’d like to make (Oktoberfest) an every year thing.
“It’s near and dear to my heart,” she added. “My dad played with the band that will be there. He played saxophone with them and they’ve toured Europe, and he was able to play in the actual Hofbrauhaus in Munich.”
The Cleveland-based, Hofbrauhaus food truck, as well as Mr. Lee’s Just Winging It food truck from Perry will be in attendance. Additionally, The Deutsche Music Verein of Cleveland will provide entertainment. DMV is a Blaskapelle, which is German for brass band, and more than 50 musicians are associated with it.
Beer and ice cream will be sold at the stadium’s concession stands.
“I think we’re well on our way to returning to normal,” Moran said, referring to the safety precautions during the pandemic. “Protocols will still be in place, but we (will be) in an outdoor setting and there’s plenty of room to spread out. You can dance if you’re inclined.
“People want to celebrate, be happy, be with each other and are looking for some joy. (Last year) was miserable and people are looking for a return to normalcy.”
Due to the lack of events, between the pandemic and financial struggles, Eastlake’s sights were set on giving back to the community this year, Moran said.
“Everybody likes to get together, eat, listen to music, be happy and that’s basically what it is. It’s a good feeling,” she said.
