Hi! Both Future and Present Ticia 2024, way back in 2011 I wrote a Delaware Unit post with our version of our unit back then. Fast forward a dozen or so years and we redid our Delaware Unit when the kids were in high school because they remembered NOTHING! Okay, that’s not fair. They remembered a little bit about their earlier geography lesson, just not that much, and I also wanted to give you a more updated version to fit in with our our United States Geography lessons and let everyone laugh at my old post.
Or maybe only I’ll be laughing. I’ll leave the old post first and then put in our adventures when we did a mini Delaware Unit in high school.

1st-grade Delaware Unit
This was a fairly simple state study because I wasn’t able to find super a lot of books about it. Just wait, the next state our geography group had to divide into TWO SUPER PACKED weeks.
This is the cover of our new geography book. Each of my kiddos has one of these, and each week as we complete things they’re going to glue their projects into their own book.
I think this will work better for us than my creating one lapbook that they can’t really mess with because it’s just one. Now they each get their own.
The USA passport and map come from Musings of Me, who has started their own geography study, which is pretty cool. They’re going in alphabetical order of the states, so most of the time we’re going to be covering stuff at different times, but when they do coincide I’m going to have a whole slew of stuff to figure out how to work in.
Here’s what’s inside so far:
- On our Delaware page is the horseshoe crab animal pages. If you’ve seen my previous animal pages you’ll note I’ve added another page to the template. That’s because the other families we’re doing this with have older kids as well this makes them do a little more work than cut and paste pictures. (Animal Report minibook for early learners)
- Delaware page is their state symbols. You can also see on the left hand page the Pennsylvania symbols where an overly zealous Batman glued that on the wrong page……. Oh well.
- Canonballs and Cornstalks (though I might add that in for my kids), my boys have not let me return this book to the library because “it has soldiers.” (Does not have a printable)
I still plan to have them trace and write the word Delaware and add that to the page, but haven’t done so yet.
Delaware Unit Resources
All right, for whatever reason when I wrote about this in the past I did not share what books I read aside from in a quick comment, the one thing that makes me truly sad is my favorite book form our original study, Cannonballs and Cornstalks is out of print. That was such a fun book about the War of 1812.
- Delaware state facts
- Nat Geo kids Delaware– always fun to see, we’ll find out when I head over to YouTube if they have their infamous bird song
- Delaware Duckster– I decided to pull up this website because it’s a great elementary site for kids
Okay prepare for psychic damage as I look up our videos. First we have Homeschool Pop. I can already hear that man’s voice, and my mind is already taking damage.
Or you can choose to go with the kids talking with the random puppet…
Wait! I found one that may not be painful. It’s confusing for everyone, I know.
Sigh, it looks like there is no Delaware video from Nat Geo Kids. I really don’t understand how they chose what videos to make. It looks like they started at M. That is truly the closest I can figure out.
No, they have Arkansas and Georgia. I have no clue what their order is. Confusion? Drawing names out of a hat.
Okay, let’s get the books written down.
My library did not have that many books and I didn’t find all that many things to pull out for unique events.
- Delaware– that good old generic 3rd grade reading level here is the state book
- Delaware Colony– a similar type of book about the colony
- When Washington crossed the Delaware: a wintertime story for young patriots– covering the events of his daring escape, a fun book, but nothing particularly outstanding about it
- President Joe Biden– A generic biography of President Biden, much like that 1st Delaware book is a generic book about Delaware it will give facts and is useful if your child is assigned a report, but is rather bland
- When the Shadbush Blooms– I like the chance to get a unique look at different cultures and that’s just what this book does
- Crab Moon– This perfectly captures the wonder of late-night walks across the beach and seeing sealife as it emerges or returns to the ocean, I highly recommend this book
- Horseshoe crabs– another of those generic nonfiction books
Delaware Unit notebooking pages
We filled out the United States notebooking pages (you can get a coupon to get them free if you JOIN MY NEWSLETTER).
We didn’t do any minibook this time, but the original time we studied Delaware we did make a few, so those are on the subscriber page.
My fun facts I wrote down:
- The first state to ratify the Constitution
- The second smallest state
- The state that cast the deciding vote for independence
That’s our great Delaware Unit. It’s pretty simple the second time around, I mainly wanted to make sure the kids knew about all the states.
