How to Fix Damaged Hair | Damaged Hair Treatment

Damaged hair is hair that has become weakened. The most common causes are heated styling, excessive colour treatments and sun damage. They cause the hair’s outer layer (the cuticle) to lift, leaving the hair weaker and prone to moisture loss, frizz and breakage. Damaged hair looks dull and it’s difficult to style.

I’ve been working with hair for over 35 years and I’ll share my expertise on treating the symptoms of damaged hair from frizz to dull, dry hair and breakage.

Plus, I’ll share my tips to prevent further damage.

1. How can you Repair Damaged Hair Fast?

Deep Conditioner Hair Mask, Restore and Shine

It’s not a quick fix. You need to build moisture into the hair over time. Regular shampooing and conditioning must be supported by a weekly treatment for damaged, dry hair.

Restore and Shine Hair Masque gets moisture back into the centre of the hair and smooths the lifted cuticle to lock in moisture, strengthening the hair to prevent breakage whilst reducing frizz and restoring shine.

Hair needs regular moisture to smooth and strengthen the cuticle.

Oh my goodness! After one use, I didn’t recognise the feel of my hair as that of my own! The reviews are all accurate – this product is mind blowing! So much so that after only one use, I’ve ordered another two – one for each of my beloved sisters!
Rashpal
Was a little skeptical about this product but so glad I ordered it. It definitely lives up to what it says on the website. No frizz, soft silky hair with a great shine. I was suffering from very dry frizz hair due to dehydrated ends – I’ve only had it for three weeks and used it once a week and every time I use it I get asked what I use to get a great shine!
Karen
Beautiful product, smells great, I’ve been using it twice a week for a few weeks now and can see the difference already (as can my hairdresser), my hair is really shiny and in great condition.
Clare
This is the most amazing hair masque. I have used it for years and it makes the condition of my hair lovely, and smells wonderful.

Getting the hair rehydrated takes time.

To maintain hydration, your hair needs a routine of cleansing and conditioning.

It’s the same approach that you take to your skin. Regular cleansing and moisturising with a good quality hydrating shampoo and conditioner will help build moisture and put you on the path to fixing damaged hair.

Use Restore and Shine Hair Masque for damaged hair once a week every week. This intensive weekly treatment will inject extra moisture into badly damaged hair. If the hair is badly damaged, I recommend treating the hair twice in the first two weeks and then once a week after that as part of your hair care routine.

2. How do you Fix Over-Processed Hair?

If the hair is over-processed, getting another colour will not fix it. It’s time to step back take some time out and make a plan.

I recommend booking a consultation with your hairdresser and discussing the best options for you.

If your hair is very damaged, consider a shorter haircut. That will help the look and feel of the hair as you take the time to treat your hair and build moisture. If you don’t want to go for a shorter cut, you need regular trims to reduce further damage from split ends.

Take some time to rehydrate your hair with Restore and Shine Hair Masque. Treat your hair every week and avoid further processing until your hairdresser is happy that the hair is strong enough to take another colour.

Always consult a professional.

3. What is the Best Hair Product for Damaged Hair?

I recommend deep conditioner, Restore and Shine Hair Masque. I spent over 4 years developing it in my salon. I’ve worked with it on many different hair types, and I haven’t found anything better. It’s the best deep conditioning hair mask I’ve worked with in over 35 years of hairdressing. It contains pro-vitamin b5 getting moisture deep into the hair’s core.

Plus, my hair mask contains soothing emollients such as avocado oil to smooth the hair cuticle and restore shine. It’s my go-to product for damaged hair.

4. How do you Fix Brittle Hair?

Natural Black Hair
Any kind of heat, including hot water, can leave hair feeling dry and lacking shine.

When hair loses moisture, it becomes brittle. Hair should feel stretchy and elastic. If hair becomes too brittle, it can start to break. Reducing the amount of heat that you apply to hair is essential. If you can’t give up heated styling tools completely, make sure you use styling protection and turn the hairdryer to a cool setting. It’s best to avoid flat irons and curling irons.

Get into the habit of applying a deep conditioning treatment every week and visit your stylist for regular trims.

It’s essential to keep split ends in check so that they don’t create further damage. Leave the hair to air-dry at least once a week. It’s a good way of giving your hair some time to recover.

5. How can I Prevent Further Damage to My Hair?

  1. Be gentle when brushing hair. Start at the ends and work up. As you brush or comb, gently hold the mid-lengths of the hair to avoid pulling at the roots.
  2. Wash hair in warm or cool water. Avoid hot temperatures. They exacerbate dryness and damage.
  3. After washing, gently pat your hair dry. Rubbing hair causes breakage and increases tangles. Try using a microfibre towel.
  4. Use a wide-tooth comb when hair is wet. Start from the ends and work your way up, taking care not to put tension on the roots.
  5. Let your hair down. A ponytail is a great way of styling hair. But wearing it too tight can put tension on the roots. Find a style that’s easy to wear down and suits your lifestyle.
  6. Turn the heat down. Hairdryers, straighteners and curling irons are high up on the list of the culprits that damage hair. Choose the cool setting to reduce damage.
  7. Reduce drying time. Most of us dry our hair for too long. Reduce drying time by just 1 minute to limit the damage.
  8. Styling protection. Use a good quality hair styling product that conditions the hair as your style. The additional conditioning will help limit the damage of heated styling tools.
  9. Give your hair a break. Air dry hair once a week.
  10. Get your hat on! Are you heading to sunnier climes? Wear a fabulous sun hat to protect your hair from the midday sun.
  11. Wear a swimming cap to protect hair from chlorine damage. Multi-task and apply a deep conditioning hair mask and pop on your swimming cap.
  12. Avoid over-processing the hair. If hair is colour-treated, get some advice from your hairdresser about the best options for you.
  13. Get regular trims. The ends of the hair are prone to breakage. Split ends, left untreated, can ride up the hair and cause breakage.
  14. Sleep on a silk or satin pillow. When we sleep, we move around, and when our hair rubs against the rough texture of cotton, it breaks and tangles. Once you start sleeping on silk or satin pillows, it’s a revelation. Hair becomes so much easier to manage in between washes, and, of course, it reduces breakage

Norris Ogario is founder and Creative Director of Ogario London. Developed in his London salon, the Ogario London haircare products reflect his belief that hydration is the key to fixing most hair problems. Hydrated hair can be styled with ease. Plus, hydration leaves hair shiny and healthy. Norris has over 35 years of hair know-how. With expertise in all hair types; from dry hair to fine or grey hair, from frizzy hair to damaged or bleached hair, curly hair and afro hair, Norris has created a healthy hair blog to share his expert advice.

I write about all aspects of healthy, shiny hair. From preventing frizzy hair to stopping split ends and styling bob hairstyles I share my experience of how to get the best from hair.

Whether I’m working with hair, writing about hair or developing hair care products I stay true to 3 principles.

1. Less is More

This is a principle I have adhered to all my hairdressing career and it gets the best results. I like to minimise the heat stress to hair from heated styling tools and take a simpler approach to styling. Over working the hair can leave it dry, damaged and flat. A simple approach is the best way to add volume to hair and keep hair looking and feeling smooth and shiny.

2. Hair needs Moisture

Moisture is the foundation of good hair care. Hair needs a routine of deep conditioning to stay frizz free and retain flexibility and strength. When it has moisture, hair elasticity is maintained, making hair easier to style.

3. Great Hair Care is Holistic

Holistic in the context of hair care is about making sure we eat a healthy, balanced diet and that we feed our hair with nourishing products. Maintaining hydration in the body contributes to good quality hair growth. Using nourishing hair products ensures our hair can retain moisture.

You’ll see these principles threaded through my blogs. My goal is to share the simplest tools and techniques to give you easy ways to care for and style your hair at home.

Ogario London is a salon developed range of natural hair care products. Because we are passionate about our products, delivering the best results is at the heart of what we do.
