Beginner Super Bulky Trivet (Free Knitting Pattern)

Looking for a quick and easy gift for the kitchen? Try this amazingly easy trivet pattern made with super bulky wool yarn.

Design Story and Inspiration for This Free Knitting Pattern

I designed this as part of the 2024 Holiday Maker’s Challenge, where we encourage each other to work to our holiday deadline. I wanted to include a very beginner-friendly pattern that would be functional, fun and easy to knit, so this pattern was born.

There are a few criteria for our patterns in the challenge, which are:

1. Uses stash yarn

2. Is easy to intermediate

3. Is small so it doesn’t take a long time to make (we have a lot of gifts to make, okay?)

4. Is well received by gift recipients

Yarn Options for This Easy Knit Trivet Pattern

For a trivet you really need a cotton or wool yarn, and I had several skeins of this 100% wool Tuff Puff yarn from Knit Picks. Feel free to use another yarn, but please be sure the yarn you choose is heat resistant (like cotton or wool). Acrylic is not a good choice for a trivet as it can melt.

I knew this yarn would knit up super quickly, so I set out to find an interesting stitch pattern that would work with a super bulky yarn (category #6).

This stitch pattern is simple knits and purls and is great for even a beginner knitter! If you can knit and purl, you can make this easy trivet pattern.

Beginner Knit Trivet Pattern Details

This pattern is a simple two row repeat that makes a super thick, sturdy fabric that will protect your table or countertops from heat damage. You simply make a square and then add a hanging loop at the top with a crochet chain (or you can use an icord).

Here is what the back side looks like:

Repeat rows 1-2 until piece measures 10″ square, finishing with row 2.

Finishing

If desired, create a loop for your trivet to hang. I used a US size L (8.00mm) crochet hook and chained 12 before slip stitching back into the same corner. You can also knit an icord loop.

Weave in ends.

Final Thoughts on the Mini Holiday Stocking

I hope you enjoy this free knitting pattern! I had a blast designing this cute stocking and am planning more stocking designs in different yarn weights.

Happy Knitting!
