For your inspiration today: a Scottish artist named Arthur Melville. You may have heard of him—he did quite well during his time. But I only recently came across his work.
It’s his watercolors that I find particularly stunning. They have a wonderful combination of intricate details, pale washes that melt together in interesting and unpredictable ways, and bursts of saturated, jewel-like color.
He was as much an adventurer as he was an artist. His paintings tell stories of France, Italy, Spain, Egypt, and the Middle East. He often sketched on location with a tiny watercolor kit. I can’t imagine the skill required to use watercolors plein air with any kind of control; they are unpredictable even in the nicest environments.
Here are some of my favorites. Keep in mind, these are just his watercolors. His oils are equally beautiful, but I’ll feature them another time.
