A look at the Calgary Flames’ current playoff odds

As the 2024-25 regular season winds down, the Calgary Flames are right in the thick of a tight playoff race. They currently occupy the second wildcard spot in the west with 71 points, but they don’t have a huge lead. The Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues and Utah Hockey club all are within reach of that wildcard spot and things could change in an instant.

With Calgary’s most recent 4-3 shootout loss against the Canucks, both teams are now tied in points. For the rest of the season, I’ll be checking in on where the Flames are at and where their playoff chances stand. This will be a weekly update until the regular season comes to an end.

This week’s playoff picture

Following the shootout loss, here are the current odds for the Flames to make the playoffs according to three major hockey statistic sites:

MoneyPuck31.3%
Hockey-Reference.com39.8%
PlayoffStatus.com42%

So that’s an average of a 37.7% chance that the Flames will reach the postseason. It’s not a high percentage at all and at this point, every win or loss will heavily influence the numbers. The really important thing for this team is getting regulation wins, which isn’t exactly going to be easy given their remaining schedule.

The week ahead

The next week for the Flames will yet again be some sort of a “gauntlet run”. Their next game will be against the Colorado Avalanche at home before hitting the road where they’ll play the Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils. All these opponents shouldn’t be taken lightly, despite recent struggles seen from some of these teams.

As for the current wildcard race, it’s looking like the following:

Calgary (IN WC SPOT)71 points
Vancouver 71 points
St. Louis 69 points
Utah 69 points

As hinted, the Flames have one of the hardest remaining schedules in the league. It’s remarkable how they still manage to stay in the hunt, but only time will if they step up to create some distance.
