6 things your vagina wants you to know

If you are a female-bodied person, you probably already know that your vagina is a pretty miraculous thing. It can birth a baby, it can give you a lot of pleasure – and it can also be a literal pain.
But there’s so much more to our vaginas than most of us know. Here are a few things every vagina-haver should know:
One quick note: the vagina is just one part of our reproductive system. It connects to the vulva on the outside, and the cervix and uterus on the inside. For this blog post, we’ll be talking about the whole shebang.
1. It’s self-cleaning!
Did you know that your vagina doesn’t need any products to keep it clean? It’s designed to clean itself! In fact, it’s pretty delicately balanced, and any products you use can quickly upset that balance, causing bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections.
If you do want to clean, just use water and, if anything, gentle, scent-free soap on your outer labia. We promise, your vagina will take care of the rest. No douches necessary – and you don’t need to use shower gels or oils either!
2. The clitoris is a pleasure powerhouse.
The part of the clitoris you can see packs a powerful punch on its own – it has double the nerve-endings that a penis has. But did you know that the clitoris is more than that little nub? It actually has two “roots” that extend down inches towards the vagina. In fact, some researchers think that what we call the “G Spot” is actually the clitoris roots.
3. It has an “A Spot”
Speaking of the G spot, have you heard of the A spot? It’s an area deep in your vagina, near the cervix, that can bring intense pleasure when stimulated. If you’ve never experienced this, it may be time for some “research!”
4. It gets bigger!
Ever wondered how a baby can fit through that small space? The vagina has an amazing ability to expand, during birth or when a person is turned on. Most vaginas are normally 3-6 inches deep, but during childbirth or sex, the cervix retracts, while the vagina expands. But don’t worry – contrary to what many people think, the vagina goes back to its regular size afterward. It’s extremely elastic. Amazing!
5. Exercise can make it happier!
And we’re not talking about Kegels (which may or may not be right for you). Exercises that build flexibility and strength can make sex more fun. Check out this list of exercises that build the strength of your pelvic and vaginal muscles, or make your pelvic area more flexible.
6. If you have a vagina, always pee after sex.
This one is a bummer. Having a lot of sex in a short period of time can result in a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), which is no fun. You can also get one from holding your pee too long, too often, or not drinking enough water.
UTIs are painful and inconvenient. But the good news is that many are preventable. Always (always!) pee after having sex, go to the bathroom when you need to pee, drink water when you’re thirsty, and wear breathable, comfortable underwear.
If you think you might have a UTI or another infection and live in the DC or Atlanta area, make an appointment to get tested and treated.
